Proper Disposal of Mineral Wool and Man-Made Mineral Fibers
Man-made mineral fibers (KMF) are installed as insulation in millions of German buildings. However, older products manufactured before 1996 are considered hazardous and must be disposed of as dangerous waste during renovation or demolition.
Old vs. New Mineral Wool
The critical date is 1996. Mineral wool produced before June 1996 contains fibers with low biosolubility that are classified as potentially carcinogenic under German hazardous substances regulations (GefStoffV). Products from after 1996 carry the RAL quality mark and are considered safe.
Identification
If a building was constructed or insulated before 1996, the mineral wool should be assumed to be old KMF. Missing RAL markings, yellowed or brittle condition, and excessive dust when handled are further indicators. When in doubt, mineral wool without proof of new-generation certification must be treated as hazardous waste.
Safe Removal (TRGS 521)
Removal must follow TRGS 521 regulations: workers require respiratory protection (FFP2 minimum), protective suits, and eye protection. The material must be placed in tear-resistant, dust-tight bags (KMF bags) and sealed airtight. Transport must be enclosed and disposal requires certified waste carriers with proper documentation.
Disposal Costs
Old KMF disposal costs 100-200 euros per ton as hazardous waste, while new mineral wool costs 40-80 euros per ton. Dismounting runs 8-20 euros per square meter.
