How Asbestos Is Disposed of in Berlin
Asbestos-containing material must not go into construction rubble or to a recycling centre. It has to be dismantled without breakage, sealed in approved big bags, labelled and taken to a licensed landfill – every step under TRGS 519 and documented. Depending on the material this costs €25 to €200 per square metre including removal, packaging and landfill fees.
The sequence is the same on every project: sampling and laboratory analysis, notification to the occupational safety authority at least seven days in advance, containment and protective measures, breakage-free removal, approved packaging, transport to a licensed landfill, and finally the disposal records for your files.

Bonded or Loosely Bound
Bonded asbestos (asbestos cement, Eternit) contains 10–15 percent asbestos held in cement and releases few fibres while intact – which is why it is unscrewed rather than broken. Loosely bound asbestos (sprayed asbestos, lightweight boards, fire protection cladding) contains up to 60 percent asbestos and releases fibres on vibration alone, requiring a sealed negative-pressure zone, personnel airlock and clearance measurement afterwards.
Where It Is Found
Roof and façade sheets (1950–1990), Floor-Flex tiles and cushion vinyl (1960–1985), tile and floor adhesives, window putty, night storage heaters, fire protection cladding and sprayed asbestos on steel beams. Rule of thumb: for buildings from before 1993 – the year of the German asbestos ban – assume asbestos until proven otherwise.
Notification and Records
Asbestos work must be notified to the occupational safety authority at least seven days in advance and may only be carried out by firms with recognised competence under TRGS 519. May I take asbestos to the landfill myself?
For small quantities of bonded asbestos in owner-occupied homes it is in principle permitted, but we advise against it: approved packaging is not available at a DIY store, many acceptance points limit private deliveries, and breakage during removal contaminates the surface below. For loosely bound asbestos, commercial properties and rented housing, DIY is ruled out.
