Homogeneous Area

A soil zone with similar properties defined under DIN 18300, replacing the former soil-class system when tendering earthwork.

A homogeneous area is a zone of subsoil defined under DIN 18300 (and related VOB Part C standards) consisting of soil or rock with comparable properties. The revised standards replaced the former soil-class system in tenders for earthwork, drilling, and shoring. For each homogeneous area, the geotechnical report specifies parameters such as grain-size distribution, density, water content, plasticity, and permeability, enabling more precise cost calculation than the old soil class.
