Berlin-Type Shoring: The Key Method for Securing Excavations

Berlin-type shoring (Berliner Verbau) is the most common method for securing excavation pits in urban areas. It was developed during the construction of the Berlin subway and is named after the city.

How It Works

Berlin-type shoring consists of vertical steel beams (usually I-profiles) driven or placed into the ground at regular intervals, with horizontal infill (timber lagging or steel plates) inserted between them as excavation proceeds. Deeper pits are additionally braced or anchored.

When Is It Used?

The method is ideal for soils above the groundwater table. Where the pit base lies below groundwater, waterproof alternatives such as sheet piling are used.

Cost

Costs typically range from €150 to €350 per square meter of shoring wall, depending on depth, soil conditions, and anchoring requirements.
