Where Is Asbestos Found?

Asbestos was used in numerous building products including roof coverings, facade cladding, floor coverings, pipes, fireproofing, and insulation materials.

What Does Asbestos Look Like? Identifying Asbestos by Material

Asbestos itself is a fibrous, mostly grey-white natural mineral – but in a finished building material it cannot be reliably identified by eye. These typical appearances are warning signs:

Asbestos insulation: Grey to whitish, cotton-wool-like or crumbly material, often as sprayed asbestos on steel beams and ceilings or inside storage heaters. Loosely bound and especially hazardous.
Asbestos plaster / filler: Grey, slightly fibrous plaster or tile adhesive, common in bathrooms and stairwells from before 1993.
Asbestos flooring: Floor-Flex and cushion-vinyl tiles (often 25×25 or 30×30 cm) with a dark, brittle bitumen adhesive (the "black glue").
Asbestos boards: Grey fibre-cement corrugated and facade panels with an even fibre structure and small drill holes at the fixings.
Storage heaters: Units made before around 1984 often contain asbestos in their internal insulation.

Important: Reliable identification is only possible through laboratory analysis – appearance and construction year are merely indicators. Do not take samples yourself; breaking the material releases fibres. We handle professional hazardous material investigation including sampling.

When Was Asbestos Banned?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral used for decades because of its heat and chemical resistance. In Germany its manufacture and use have been fully banned since 1993. It was mainly installed between the 1950s and early 1990s – buildings from that era are therefore generally considered suspect.
